New Biofuels

From micro-algae to biofuel: micro-algae cultivation for the production of biofuels and fine chemicals

New biofuel opportunities

KEMA advices clients how to develop and produce biofuels which, importantly, do not compete for food resources. In this area the European Commission has set the following sustainability targets:

  • 20 percent sustainable energy production

  • 20 percent energy conservation

  • 10 percent biofuels.

We have developed our own management decision model for the cultivation of micro-algae - an effective, non-food, biofuel - named the AlgaeValue Model.
KEMA's experience in this area is well targeted on European Commission goals. For large-scale cultivation of algae we can perform feasibility studies on:

  • identification of conversion routes

  • production capacities and energy efficiency

  • technical and economic feasibility (locations, systems, products)

  • sensitivity analysis for cost calculations

  • commercial availability of required technology.
