Global Contact: Touching base in Asia
Issue 4-2011
Global Contact is KEMA’s worldwide quarterly magazine that is distributed among 12,000 of KEMA’s clients and relations. Global Contact is a broad platform. It includes news from around KEMA as well as articles providing insight into today’s critical energy and industrial trends and topics, and the divers projects KEMA and her clients are working on.
This issue features:
Touching base in Asia
"UHV grid is the backbone of a strong smart grid" - In China, State Grid Corporation of China is strongly involved in the realization of ultra-high-voltages lines. KEMA and SGCC discussed the importance of these highly innovative complex projects.
Quality assurance for HVDC primary equipment - China is rapidly creating thousands of kilometers of HVDC transmission line to bring power from renewable and coal energy plants in the country’s interior to consumers in the booming coastal cities. The most complex elements of the new infrastructure are the primary equipment of the converter stations.
A base in India - KEMA has been active in India and neighboring countries, such as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, for about twenty years. To emphasize our commitment to this region, we have recently opened an office in Bangalore.
Independent high-voltage cable testing in Korea - With the increasing energy demand in Asia, the need for reliable high-voltage cables becomes more urgent. The research institute of KEPCO, one of the largest energy companies in the world asked KEMA with the design of a high voltage cable testing facility to test according to the latest standards.
“We are highly active in the smart gridspace” - Thailand’s Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) services 73 provinces over approximately 510,000 km2. Mr. Narongsak Kamales is the Governor of PEA, and recently spoke with KEMA about smart grid developments and PEA’s activities in this area.
And
Cracked biomass - Co-firing biomass in power plants that run primarily on coal is one of way of trying to reduce the greenhouse effect. Turning biomass into ‘bio-coal’ is something of a holy grail for both engineers and business managers. And ‘torrefaction’ could be the way to go.
Put smart grid infrastructure to the test - Our industry needs to continue to advance, simply to deal with the rapid onset of demands that are being placed upon us. As a result, KEMA recently opened the Smart Grid Interop Lab in the U.S.
Professional site for power transformers - All preparation work on power transformers can be performed on a site near KEMA’s High Power Laboratory (HPL) in Arnhem, before and after the short-circuit test. The customer can focus on the most critical aspect: the short-circuit test itself.
Reshaping renewable energy policies - With the purpose of bringing Europe’s goals closer to fulfillment, a consortium of nine knowledge institutes and companies has spent the last two years analyzing EU member states’ policies and incentives in this field.
German consumers keen on energy efficiency - New research highlights that Germans are keen to change their ways if it saves them money, but majority rely on utilities to educate them on how to go about this.
